How To Read Guitar Tabs

The Disadvantages of Guitar Tabs

It is already a well proved fact that serious musicians necessarily must learn to read standard notation. While guitar tabs may be easy to pick up they inherently have some serious disadvantages that do not help in furthering the subtle skills of a musician. Some of these flaws are so obvious that they immediately make the usage of guitar tabs seem less desirable. Guitar tabs are widely found across the web so as to help music enthusiasts and novice guitarist pick up the music of a track. But what such widely available and free lessons do not show is that how long to hold each note while playing a particular track. Hence, chances are that if the novice has not heard the original guitar part of the song playing he will not be able to pick up the rhythm of the song. In order to pick up the rhythm, it is again essential that the guitarist have a latent sense of rhythmic patterns so that he may not just have to depend on tablature alone. Therefore, if one is truly passionate about knowing not just the music but also the rhythm of a track, one surely must take the pains to learn standard notation.

During live performances like concerts, we already know that guitarists prefer using tablature since it is easy to read and allows guitarists some sort of creative liberty. Guitarists can take the privilege of not sticking to the usual rhythm and can make subtle changes of their own in the track while playing. However, problem occurs when the guitarist is performing live in sync with other instruments around him like the piano. To perform in sync, all the musicians must be able to connect with other musicians through the help of their musical instruments. In this case, tablature being the native of just guitar, it makes extremely difficult for guitarists to connect with others since; piano players and the others are unable to understand tablature.

These major disadvantages of using just tablature to develop guitar skills may sometimes alienate the guitarist from other musicians. Also unlike standard notation, tablature does nothing in nurturing basic theory skills in the guitarist. Tablature does not give any scope to help one learn about melody, harmony or the keys. The tablature is no help when it comes to illustrating the relationship between various notes, the intervals between them or how each chord is built. All these things, in future, essentially contribute in making a great and passionate musician. It also helps draw a clear distinction between a good and a great guitarist. So if one is really enthusiastic about developing the finer nuances of the instrument, one must learn about the dynamics, rests, duration of each note and the rhythm through standard notation alone.

The best part of knowing standard notation, which simultaneously is also the greatest disadvantage of tablature is that it makes a guitarist flexible. A flexible guitarist can figure out standard notation of other instruments and can adapt the music written for them into the guitar. Thus, it is necessary that studio and session musicians compulsorily learn standard notation.
