How To Read Guitar Tabs

Why are Guitar Tabs Popular?

Tablature is the way of representing instrumental fingering and is widely used to denote musical notation for stringed instruments. Standard notation being the more orthodox method of music learning is a bit complicated and requires a lot of detailed study and training. Although it is extremely necessary for professional guitarists to learn the art of reading standard notation for a successful musical career, yet, standard notation can become extremely difficult for novices and beginner guitarists to read. Stringed instruments, especially the guitar, can be most easily followed with a simpler way of reading notations which is called tablature. Compared to the numerous complex musical notes, tablature is a very simple form of representing notes using a staff of 6 horizontal and parallel lines.

Guitar tablature not just allows making music representations easier, in fact; they truly help beginners to get hold of the music faster. Tablature is just the art of denoting each string on the horizontal lines using letters. There is a high small letter ‘e’ at the top and a capital letter’E’ at the bottom for denoting the low string. The numbers written against each line tells the guitarist which fret to press on that string. Guitar tabs are so easily learnt and free lessons are so widely available on the net, that anyone with a bit interest in playing the instrument can really understand it. Therefore, guitar tabs are so popular even among professional musicians.

Using guitar tabs is not just a recent phenomenon; even the Renaissance times were used to the wide use of guitar tablature. Guitar tabs found wide acceptance with the invention of the acoustic and the electric guitar in modern times. Incidentally, since only the beginning of a note can be represented as a tab, this forms of representation even gives the artist creative liberty to play the chord for duration of his preference. The artist is also at liberty to choose the number of times he wants to play a particular chord. Hence, such liberty and a free run of creativity are highly favored by guitarists at live performances. Guitar tablature is thus, more commonly used by guitarists at concerts than standard notation.

The other very obvious reason for guitar tablature to become famous is the rise in popularity of the easier to play guitar forms like the electric and the acoustic. More and more self-taught musicians evolved who began to depend more on guitar tabs than standard notation. The sheer trouble of learning the nuances of standard notation has made guitar tablature more popular. Guitar tablature is most suitable for beginners or learners because it tells them exactly where to play a note on the fretboard. Tablature helps in increasing enthusiasm of aspiring guitarists. However, while tabs help one to learn a stringed instrument like guitar quickly, it does not help to polish the finer skills of the musician. Therefore, a true artist must definitely t6ake the pains of learning standard notation. At the end, however, it should once again be stated that in the fast-paced modern times tabs have grown more popular owing also to the creative liberty it provides to guitarists.
